If you have teeth that need to be extracted, you are facing the option of dental implants or dentures. Which one is best for your situation? Dentures often have a stereotype attached to them, which has led to a lot of misinformation out there. Should you opt for dentures or implants? Here are some facts you need to know about each dental option.
What are Dentures?
While the term “dentures” often conjures up images of floating teeth next to a sink, we are here to tell you dentures have come a long way in the past few decades. Modern dentures are made from advanced material and custom-fitted to your mouth. The chances of having the dentures rub on the gums are drastically less than what used to occur, leading to pain, inflammation and swelling. Our dentures are fitted so you don’t end up with the teeth falling out mid-conversation!
We use materials to create a mold and a digital rendition of your mouth. Having this accurate information allows the laboratory we use to create dentures that are the exact measurements for your mouth. We will try the dentures in and adjust them as needed to make sure they fit properly. Each patient is provided at-home care tips to aid in keeping the dentures looking new and nice for years to come.
Are Dentures Still Popular?
While dental implants really have taken the industry by storm over the last 20 years, dentures are still a popular option for a lot of patients. Dentures are easy to maintain, and they solve the problem of several missing teeth and advanced tooth decay. Getting the dentures created is painless and easy compared to the length of time it takes for dental implants. However, they are not a replacement tooth like a dental implant, which is a permanent part of your jawbone.
Dentures are affordable for patients with several missing teeth. We find that most dentures look exactly like your normal teeth, and most people won’t be able to spot the difference. Contact our office if you currently have dentures, and would like a second opinion about your current oral health state.
Dental Implants – What Are They?
Dental implants have really transformed the dental industry, especially in the last decade. We have seen an influx of patients seeking implants as they are not the standard for tooth restoration. Dental implants are permanent solution to a missing tooth. If you have an extraction, that tooth needs to be replaced as the missing tooth will lead to shifting of the other teeth. Shifting of the teeth not only causes problems with crooked teeth, it could impact your speech and eating.
Dental implants use a titanium screw and surgically embed it into the jawbone, allowing it to be anchored in place like the root of your natural teeth. Once the screw has bonded with the jawbone, we attach a prosthetic tooth (crown or cap) to the screw, allowing you to have a perfect tooth. Patients love dental implants because they look completely natural and they are secure in your mouth. You don’t need to worry about the tooth falling out, and you don’t need to worry about cavities occurring with the dental implant.
Are Dental Implants the Right Choice?
Dental implants are a permanent solution, so you need to carefully consider this. Every patient is different so it’s hard to say they are the “best” as that is not always the case for everyone. We recommend coming into our office for a consultation to discuss dental implants. We will need to examine your jawbone and the bone density to see if it’s strong enough to support implants.
